The Progressive Revelation of the Goodness of God

“You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free” (John 8:32).

John 5:39, “You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about Me.”

Romans 16:25-26, “Now to Him who is able to establish you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery which has been kept secret for long ages past, 26 but now is manifested, and by the Scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the eternal God, has been made known to all the nations, leading to obedience of faith.

2 Peter 1:12 Therefore I intend always to remind you of these qualities, though you know them and are established in the truth that you have.

Heb 1:1 Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.”

Philip Yancy, said, “Because God is better than I think, I must adjust my thinking and the tenderness of my heart until I live conscious of both His nature and His presence”.

For many people, when they read the Old Testament, they can be stumbled at some places concerning how the goodness of God was being expressed. At some places in the Old Testament, God seemed to be angry and bent on destroying His people. But when we read the New Testament, all that we see Jesus did was loving the people, healing them and delivering them from the bondage and oppression of the enemy. How do we reconcile this especially when we understand the Jesus had come by his own admission, to reveal the perfect Father.

To help us resolve this seeming contradiction, it will instructive for us to understand the Progressive Revelation of the Goodness of God and to see things through the perspective of Jesus! He who has seen the Father is fit to reveal Him to us.

Therefore, it behooves us to look at God through the glasses of the Son! Any other way will lead us astray as Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. We cannot come to the Father except through him. In fact, we cannot understand God unless we see Him through Jesus Christ! Expect a fresh perspective that will cause you to appreciate and read the Old Testament more! Amen.
