Ichaboding – A dangerous presence game!

Isaiah 43:5 Fear not, for I am with you; …7
everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made.”

1 Sam 4:21 And she named the child Ichabod, saying, “The glory has departed[b] from Israel!” because the ark of God had been captured and because of her father-in-law and her husband. 22 And she said, “The glory has departed from Israel, for the ark of God has been captured.”

Ex 33:15 15 And he said to him, “If your presence will not go with me, do not bring us up from here. 16 For how shall it be known that I have found favor in your sight, I and your people? Is it not in your going with us, so that we are distinct, I and your people, from every other people on the face of the earth?”

Rev 2:5 Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent.

When we trace the rise and fall of the Jewish people, we will inevitably ask ourselves an important question – what caused the rise and the fall? There could be many reasons that one could put forth to explain the rise and the fall but we will always come back to one main question – did they have a problem of Ichabod?

What is Ichabod? It is simply the absence of the presence and glory of God – inglorious! When the presence of God leaves a person, a people or a place, there can be only one and one consequence – desolateness! Fruitlessness like a plague will overtake the people or the city or nation!

When we look at the church of Jesus Christ for the last 2000 years, we will also come to the same conclusion! The rise and fall of the church is linked directly to the the presence or absence of the glory of God! Why?

Isaiah 43 tells us we were created for glory. Rom 3 tells us that we have fallen short of glory because of sin. Until and unless we are restored to the place of glory, all our efforts will be futile and fruitless. Nothing of worth will be established!
Are you walking in His glory? Is His presence manifested through you? Let this sermon on Ichaboding empower you to walk in His love and glory. Amen.
